Best Photographs of 2011

It’s that time of year again. The time when I pull out some of my “best” photographs from the previous year. As always, what’s “best” is hard to determine. I certainly have my favourites and certainly others have their favourites. Some images are more journalistic, others fun and others just because. No riots this year, no occupy photos, maybe these aren’t even good but… they all happened during my 2011 journey.

Photography in 2011 was somewhat strange in many ways. I ended up shooting substantially less this year than in the past for a number of reasons. Partly family related, partly due to other projects (remember my wooden boat?) and even perhaps…. I was beginning to burn out a little. Likely the biggest culprit was not travelling overseas for the first time in at least a decade. These overseas trips have always inspired me with new surroundings, languages, food and colours to experience. I’m not saying that I get tired of what’s around me but… change can be good. I did make it to Texas however so not all was lost!

Much of my time this year was spent updating a number of web sites (this site included) with my main gallery site now containing over 11,000 images and working on an ambitious project The Nature and Travel Online Magazine which I believe has great potential.

What’s in store for 2012? The overseas trips are scheduled to return along with finishing a number of e-book projects that I’m working on. On the web site front I’m hoping to take the Nature and Travel photography site to a whole new level. This is a labour of love but I think that it’s important to share our knowledge and what better way to do this? Then there’s the GoPro camera that I have used a little but must really put through its’ paces and, the old boat that’s almost finished but still has a ways to go. It looks like I’ll keep busy!

What’s on my wish list this year? Really only one item stands out, the new Nikon V1 camera. This Nikon sure looks like it has potential for the style of travel I prefer. Compact, robust, interchangeable lenses and not at Lieca prices. You gotta love that! Now, if anyone wants to gift this to me I’ll make it worth your while – email for details!!!!!

Happy Holidays and all the best for 2012
