Carlsbad Caverns National Park, New Mexico

I have wanted to visit Carlsbad Caverns National Park for years and we finally made the decision to swing by. My first impression was “what have we got ourselves into?” as we swung by the visitor’s center in the late afternoon of our arrival and discovered likely 1,000 cars and RV’s parked there. What could it possibly be like inside the caverns?

Being a photographer we headed up early the next morning when the park first opened. I know in some ways this “getting up early” doesn’t make any sense in caves as there is no golden hour at sunrise but being early does mean fewer people as most tourists haven’t ¬†finished breakfast by the time I’m generally well into a work day. Fortunately this plan worked beautifully as we had a few hours of relatively quiet time in the enormous caverns.

Carlsbab Caverns exceeded my expectations. Words that come to mind are “amazing, stunning and mind boggling”. This park is a real gem and shouldn’t be missed if you’re in the area. A few days of photographs and I could still go back for more.

From a technical standpoint photographing in the caves was interesting. I’m working on an article to share my experiences.
