Earthquakes Coming? Gotta go!

Hiking along the San Andreas Fault, Coachella Valley, California

The past month has been an interesting experience living close to the San Andreas Fault in the Coachella Valley of California. At any rate, the park we are staying at has begun to empty as all the northerners head back home before the heat gets insufferable in the desert. We are planning on staying for another 5 days but the streets will be quiet.

One interesting rumour I heard from my wife yesterday is that people are leaving a little early before “the big one hits”. Wow!, that’s great to hear a few hours after I had been stradling the San Andreas Fault while on a hike. I could have been swallowed up, never to be heard from again (don’t get your hopes up, I survived!). One of our neighbors that had planned on staying through the weekend packed up and left today, “have to get back home now” they said. Others are leaving tomorrow morning.

What’s this all about? It turns out there have been a couple decent quakes and something like 200 aftershocks in the Salton Sea area about an hour south. Palm Springs likely didn’t feel anything, we sure didn’t. The local papers are discussing the “Big One” that is going to happen “SOON”. We have got to leave!

Even the Red Cross has got involved in this mentioning that the “Big One” hasn’t happened for 300 years so we had better be prepared… or leave, the easy way out. I guess I’ll have to leave. Hopefully the big one won’t be for another week because I’m not cutting my warm weather break short for an earthquake.
