Hoi An, Vietnam
The ancient town of Hoi An lies 30 km south of Danang on the banks of the Thu Bon River. Hoi An was one of the major trading centers of Southeast Asia in the 16th century. Hoi An has a very distinctive Chinese atmosphere with tile roofed houses and narrow streets. Many of the original structures and some of the streets still remain. Many of the houses are made of rare wood, decorated with lacquered boards and panels engraved with Chinese characters. Pillars were also carved with ornamental designs. Hoi An is now known for the many tailors that provide quality clothing at very affordable prices.
