“If you build it, they will come”

Ray Kinsella’s movie, Field of Dreams will likely be known for decades for one quote “If you build it, they will come”. Unfortunately his vision is alive and well when it comes to shopping malls.

It’s amazing what humans have been programmed to do during the past few decades. Cabazon, a small town in the middle of nowhere, has a megamall located in the middle of nowhere. Why would anyone go there?

So what’s amazing about a megamall in Cabazon? What’s amazing is that the place is packed full of locals and tourists looking for bargains at something like 130 factory outlets. Calvin Klein, Eddie Bauer, Tag Heuer, DKNY and many others I’ve never heard of. Twenty shoe stores, ten handbag stores and a Bose store for the bored guys. Bus tours roll in from Los Angeles and San Diego, all to save (save?) a few dollars. Does this make sense? Of course not but the world seems to think it does. My impression is that the prices weren’t that amazing but… I’m a guy, what do I know?

The girl watching was good, a scoop of ice cream cost $4.55 and my double espresso was somewhat bitter but hey, I’m a guy, what do I know? One hundred thirty stores and I didn’t spend a penny other than the gas it took to drive out there. My wife, maybe $300, not bad considering this is the only game in town. A thought struck me as we were leaving. Maybe Cabazon needs a sports bar where all the guys can drink and gamble while the wives spend money on clothes. On entering the highway I realized this has already been done, there is a Casino a few miles away!
