Islands Folk Festival – Providence Farm

One of my summer highlights is going to the Islands Folk Festival held at Providence Farm in the Cowichan Valley. The folk festival has a great selection of musicians many from Canada but also other parts of the globe. A special emphasis is made to showcase local musicians and emerging musicians as well. This is put on by the Cowichan Folk Guild and they would be pleased to sell you tickets or put you to work as a volunteer! This years festival is being held July 24 – July 26.

I have photographed the event seriously the past two years and have been very pleased with the images. Shooting live music, especially at night is a challenge that I greatly enjoy. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the festival so I expect it will be the best party yet. I already have my tickets, hope to see you there.

I am curious. Having looked at so many of your photographs and realizing that you would not choose to include a “bad” photography here, I have to know: did you deliberately take Ed Peekeekoot’s face out of focus. Was his hand the focus, then? And the guitar?

    Hi Cherie,

This image is part of a large series of photos that I have shot over the past few years showing the hands of musicians working the instrument. I’ll post the entire series some day, it’s interesting the different styles depending on the sound required and of course personal technique.
