I had the opportunity to photograph the Monster Energy Motocross Nationals Motocross at the Nanaimo Wastelands this past weekend. While I’ve never been a huge fan of motorcycles in general and have never followed motorcycle racing I have to admit that this event was a blast and exceptionally fun to photograph. It looks like the type of sport I might try if I were a little younger.
Three years ago I attended the same event (see Motocross madness) in wonderful sunny weather. This year was mostly overcast so I decided to try different photography techniques such as insanely slow shutter speeds at close distances. One item that was “totally rad” about the situation is how close you can get to the action unlike modern day car racing. There are areas of the track where you are within feet of these guys (and gals, there’s a ladies series as well!) which even makes the photography side of the sport high adrenaline.
