Photos of Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris

I finally have images online of the Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. This cemetery is one of the city’s most visited tourist attractions and well worth wandering around with many interesting graves such as Jim Morrison, Frédéric Chopin, Oscar Wilde, Édith Piaf and numerous others, many of which I have no idea who they are. A great list is on Wikipedia at Père Lachaise Cemetery. Very photogenic, don’t miss Père Lachaise if you happen to be visiting Paris.

From a photography standpoint, the light is interesting most of the day as it filters through the trees although as is generally the case, early morning and late evening tend to be a little easier to work with. Also, many of the tombs are very dark inside so either the use of a tripod or high speed lenses and high ISO settings will be required. Personally I didn’t use a tripod and found that an ISO of about 800 or so provided the required shutter speeds. If you do want to use a tripod apparently you require a permit available from the Hotel de Ville.

Give yourself plenty of time, Père Lachaise cemetery is quite large and sitting down to enjoy the quiet and peacefulness of the area is part of the experience.
