Having spent two days wandering around the Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival a change was needed and I managed to get out on the water for the NW Schooner Cup, an annual race featuring those gorgeous schooners you see photographs of everywhere. I went out on the committee boat for the start and then transferred over to the course boat allowing me to photograph the schooners from different angles and in quite close. It’s very impressive the amount of speed these large schooners carry and I was equally impressed with how noisy the water and sails are when they are changing course at the turns. Thanks to everyone involved that made these photos possible.

A few from the event, many more will likely turn up in the next few months after I work my way through the other Port Townsend festival images.

Kevin – that shot of the Alcyon is awesome! How do you get yourself invited on the committee boat for events like this?

      Hi Travis,

Glad you like the photo. It’s actually pretty cool to be circling these boats at close range and watching the image change in the viewfinder. Some work out a little better than others, this is one of them.

As for how to get out? I emailed beforehand asking about the situation as I’ve been working with the idea of doing a book about the wooden boat scene on the west coast. The organizers were very supportive although it took a little scrambling to make this shoot happen. I find asking around works miracles, most folks are excited about the events as we are and will do their best to accommodate you!

      hi
I own and skipper the schooner Maryke Violet and wonder if you got any shots of us. We are a white hull and flew a fisherman with a red maple leaf on it and the number 51 on the mainsail
      Thanks

      Hi Jim,

I likely do as I certainly remember your boat with the red maple leaf? Are you Canadian by any chance? I’ll be digging through images for the next few weeks, will get in touch. I hope you had as much fun as we did.
