Rio Grande River, Big Bend National Park

The Rio Grande is a very picturesque river, especially in Big Bend National Park in Texas.

After spending some time on the Arizona/Mexico border we were quite relieved to see that there were no major fences running down the middle of the river. Rumour had it that George Bush wanted to fence off Mexico completely. What a shame that would be. Arizona was crazy with fences, border patrols and border stops everywhere. Here in Texas, one could walk to Mexico in a minute and easily return. Unfortunately Homeland Security has other ideas and threatens you with a $5,000 dollar fine and possible imprisonment for doing this fateful walk. A real shame, I would have loved to visit a few of the local villages. The border here has been officially closed since 2002 but there is renewed hope and a few promises that the border will be opened later this year.

In these images the Rio Grande is at a very low level after something like 159 days without rain.  The first 2 images are at sunset, the 3rd early in the morning. What beautiful light! On another note, Mexico is to the left of the Rio Grande and Texas is on the right. Wouldn’t it be great if we could cross and be friends!
