What’s coming up in 2010?

Alcyone, 33rd Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival, 2009

2009 turned out to be a busy year for us at Kevin Oke Photography. I was very fortunate to photograph many different events and festivals, much of the natural beauty of the area and it seems almost anything else that happened locally. Trips to California and Washington and a large amount of boating local waters were thrown in. This is the first year in many that we didn’t fly overseas for a long trip, a conscious decision to explore the beautiful area that we call home. The highlight of 2009 was the release of the new book The Cowichan – Duncan, Chemainus, Ladysmith and Region in late October and the book signings and interviews that go along with these projects. A hard year to top but a good challenge is needed!

2010 looks to be filled with adventure as well with a good deal of travel as well as a few new projects coming up. Trips are planned for the west coast of the US and a foray into Arizona this spring while summer will have me travelling by boat, working on a long term project to document the many marine parks and island off the coast of British Columbia. This of course is what I’ve been working on for a number of years but every year I see a little more of this amazing area and continue to expand on my stock photography portfolio. Being a wooden boat owner we will be making the trip down to Port Townsend for the annual Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival again, a long weekend of inhaling boats, more boats and good food and drink. This will be my third year so it’s also a good time to catch up with friends. Some talk in the Oke household is of a possible trip to Europe in the fall, perhaps Portugal or Italy? New culture, colours and languages is a real creative boost for me and always looked forward to.

On a local note, I’ll be photographing in the Cowichan Valley and region regularly, likely filling in holes in my stock work as opposed to photographing a particular event for the 5th time for example. The highlights for me are the Islands Folk Festival and being a little of an amusement park nut the return of the Cowichan Exhibition after a one year hiatus. I’m sure many other “gigs” will surface as the year goes on, perhaps more sports to challenge the creative eye!

Photography Workshops:

After numerous requests I am planning a series of photography workshops for the late spring and summer. These workshops will take place in the Cowichan and will cover basic DSLR use for beginners as well as advanced courses with subjects such as macro work or low light photography. Stay tuned for additional information about dates and locations. If you are interested in being added to a list with the latest updates please fill in the form here. Don’t hesitate to ask about a particular photography subject that might interest you.
