Cowichan River Estuary – Vancouver Island

I have been spending time during the past few months looking at photos of the Cowichan River Estuary for my latest book The Cowichan – Duncan, Chemainus, Ladysmith and Region. The Cowichan River Estuary flows into Cowichan Bay and the area is impacted significantly by the cool air coming off the ocean. At other times, the warm air from the upper reaches of the Cowichan Valley flows out over the bay creating a very hot and dry climate during the peak of the summer.

What struck me as I was working through the images is how dramatic the skies change over the period of a year as the seasons change. The foliage changes as well from the lush green of spring to the golden hues of late fall. Here’s a small sampling of this extraordinary area of Vancouver Island. Unfortunately most of my images are from the winter; perhaps I should stay closer to home during our beautiful summers!
