Wooden Boats and make work projects

KO_A44686AI’ve been a little slow on the blogging the past month with Christmas, New Years and now…. a boat project! Our trusty 50 year old wooden boat has been in need of a major interior overhaul for; 50 years or so! This January I have put it upon myself to do just that. While I don’t expect to get the work completely finished this month I am planning to at least relaunch her by the end of the month.

Big plans include the addition of an oven in the new galley. Cherie enjoys cooking while we are out and I enjoy eating so this is a no brainer. The old galley is becoming an office area so I can actually work while I’m travelling. While this seems like an odd thing to do I don’t look at boating as a purely recreational pursuit but more as a way to take me to spectacular areas for my photography. Finally, a new berth is going in so sleeping will be so much better than before.

As with any old boat a few minor hull issues are being dealt with as well. Perhaps the boat won’t leak as much when I put her back in. Then again, all wooden boats leak so I shouldn’t get my hopes up about this.

I’ll leave it up to you whether ripping a completely useable boat apart is a sane move (or owning a wooden boat for that matter!) but here are a few “deconstruction” photos. Hopefully I can update this soon with the improved look!

The beginnings of a modified deck area. Is this crazy or what!
